Frying tango tonight!

My brain is fried by the Dispari's! Here's a sample from their milonga - a fast dance, light footed and for them, different timings going on as they go into double time and the lead stays in single time, or vice versa. Great atmosphere and hoping the organisers can come over to Belfast some time to consolidate links. Daunting dancing!!

This is the tango they taught. Their style is Salon Tango which stresses the tango embrace and walking. Here there is great musicality - it is slow and succulent, ponderous and relishing every moment together on and off the dance floor:

I watch a lot of the evening! I've also taken more and more notes on the teaching and learning of a dance as usual - possible danger of hiding behind my notebook!?!?

Wk 1

This is a busy week - not knowing the class - will they dance? what will they make of the readings? how do we fix QUBOnline? The P-room is squashed! Play Rize to give a sense of the significance of dance in people's lives, how it can be a life changer and life saver and where it comes from and how anthropologists might use it as the Society and the Dance thesis.

The tango is coming along slowly. Off to London this w/e for a weekend of Tango South London - revisiting the summer with them in the south of France!

Pre-term

September 2012

Pre term - getting the module ready with some exciting new readings, a few visiting artists and a completely different dance since the last time this module ran!  This time i am back to beginner with the tango - a good position to be and to reflect from, challenging, empathetic with other learners, self-conscious, frustrated, perplexed and challenged physically.  I can see how the moves are done, and then i try to go about them!?!

i'll tell u a Limerick ...

friday nite and it feels like the weekend already. wed/thurs was a trip to Limerick to that FABULOUS World Irish Music and Dance Academy - the best facilities for music and dance that there can be.

Plus the nicest staff and students - did a joint session on FEELING SALSA with Cathriona Murphy who teaches salsa to the deaf community. Apart from the mice-scare, it was grand! Good questions to think about and some networking for Easter and applied dance activities.

I Want that Mirror Ball for the Peformance Room!!!

Er. 5hr drive was broken in Dublin with BacchataDublin - a dance i never feel confident with and generally push my partner away from me [sorry CD - 10Sq last thurs!!]. Mario has a tango/bacchata routine, broke it down with body movements and weights, made it look fluid, elegant, intimate, sexy, poetry on four legs!!!! It all in the hip changes and is an exaggeration together of what happens in the salsa at any rate. you have to be really confident and comfortable in and with your own body for this - and they say that salsa is sexy! pah ...

Love it and felt i got some of the movements and that i have a future with that dance rather than a hidden past with it!?!?

Jive and Ballroom charity ball tonite - not sure if there will be any opportunity. Then ballroom competitions this Sunday - we are registered and tonight is the rehearsal in public!!

Wednesday, 9 February 2011

wk2 already!!!

getting into the swing of things - classes and a good crowd [flock??] of students. but harder to combine the dancing and the studying this week with the timetables:

monday - lessons and practice and the political tour of w- belfast - is there really a Belfast dan[c/d]er??

tuesday - start the workshop and the usual cries of 2 left feet [us stigmatised left handers?!] but people settle very quickly into body movements and learn it fast: Merengue and Chacha. teaching - talk more or talk less and just copy a body movement without words?

wed - lesson time :)

thurs - 10sq latin nites can't be beat for coming together?

friday - ivanhoe ballroom - a dance nite but really a practice nite in public as we rehearse routines set in a clinical empty space in public where you have distractions and stops and starts to contend with - very different dancing! nd to execute on auto pilot with drop in and drop out portions ... !

saturday - ZUMBA day!!!!
